With a Hindu funeral ceremony being held within a day of the death, families and the funeral director work quickly to prepare the body, including ritual washing (the holy bath) while reciting mantras, big toes ties together and the hands placed palm to palm in a prayer position. The deceased is then shrouded in a plain white sheet and placed in a simple coffin. Ash or Sandalwood is applied to the forehead of a man, and Turmeric is used for females. When viewing the body, mantras or hymns are recited.
As Hindu’s believe the soul is reincarnated, most Hindu funeral end with the loved one being cremated. This is traditionally performed within 24 hours of death to allow the soul to escape the body. The Hindu mourning period will continue 10 to 30 days following the service, with many families holding a ceremony on the 13th day to perform rituals to help release the soul of the deceased for reincarnation.
A Hindu Funeral in Melbourne is usually 30 minutes to 1 hour long. The coffin is bought into the temple (or any place the funeral is being held) feet first and placed at the front. Guests are then invited to view the body. A Hindu priest or senior family members usually conduct the Hindu funeral ceremony. The deceased is then transferred for cremation.
For many years, Brember Family Funerals have worked with Hindu families to ensure your Hindu funeral rituals are catered for. By understanding what you and your family need, we created a specific Hindu funeral package to help you organise a funeral quickly and easily.
