Frequently Asked Questions

The most appropriate dress code for a Sikh funeral is smart and modest. White is the traditional mourning colour; however, black, navy or grey is acceptable in Australia. Out of respect for the religion, you should avoid showing too much skin and wear a head covering (men & women). Fancy or flashy jewellery should be avoided.

Cremation is the preferred method in a Sikh funeral as, like many Asian religions, Sikhs believe the physical body serves no purpose after death as the soul leaves the body. A burial funeral is accepted if the family prefer this method; however, no headstone or monument is used.

A Sikh funeral is usually held within 3 days of the person passing away. Funeral arrangements are commenced immediately, so please contact Brember Family Funerals, who are familiar with Sikh funeral preparation.

The length of a Sikh funeral varies greatly depending on the traditions and rituals the family follows. After prayers at home, some hold a service before the cremation, the cremation itself, and then another service. Generally, a Sikh funeral is 30 minutes to 1 hour long.
