Hindu Pre-Funeral Arrangement
At Brember, we provide important services to the family prior to the funeral taking place. These include consulting with the family, arranging priests, and procuring necessary items for the rituals as well as scheduling the ceremony.
Hindu Funeral Ceremony and Rituals
You can rely on our team to arrange all aspects of the cremation, including conducting final rites and facilitating Indian funeral traditions. We are mindful of the funeral customs observed by the Hindu community, as well as the need for slight variations of practices across different families and groups. Oftentimes, the body remains briefly at the family home (for one, sometimes two days) before being transported to the crematorium, with no embalming necessary due to the brief timing. Following the cremation, a reception may be held for either family only or family and friends.
Hindu Post-Funeral Support
After the funeral, we will remain on hand to support you with other services you may require. At Brember, we can assist with a memorial service if required, provide support and guidance on mourning practices, and provide any other additional services the loved one requested prior to passing or as required by the family.

Hindu Cremations
We will help you arrange a cremation in line with Hindu traditions, knowing the funeral and cremation are to be carried out usually within a few days of the death. “We’re available 24/7 to bring your loved one into our care, anywhere in metropolitan Melbourne. At our care facility, family members are welcome to take part in washing and dressing. Your loved one is then laid out in a flat-lid coffin with white cotton lining, fully prepared for the funeral.”
After this, The body is carried into the funeral location feet first and a ceremony is held by a Hindu priest or senior family members. After this, the body is transported to the crematorium and cremated. A witness to the cremation is provided. If the intention is to inter at the cemetery, transport of your loved one to the cemetery location is then provided. Please note that there are additional fees for weekend services (such as for witnessing the cremation, for the funeral director/priest and for chapel and cremation use), as well as for extra time at the chapel.

Frequently Asked Questions
With a Hindu funeral ceremony being held within a day of the death, families and the funeral director work quickly to prepare the body, including ritual washing (the holy bath) while reciting mantras, big toes tied together and the hands placed palm to palm in a prayer position. The deceased is then shrouded in a plain white sheet and placed in a simple coffin. Ash or Sandalwood is applied to a male’s forehead, and Turmeric is used for females. When viewing the body, mantras or hymns are recited.
As Hindus believe the soul is reincarnated, most Hindu funerals end with the loved one being cremated. This is traditionally performed within 24 hours of death to allow the soul to escape the body. The Hindu mourning period will continue for 10 to 30 days following the service, with many families holding a ceremony on the 13th day to perform rituals to help release the soul of the deceased for reincarnation.
Hindu funeral services in Melbourne are usually 30 minutes to 1 hour long. The coffin is brought into the funeral location feet first and placed at the front. Guests are then invited to view the body. A Hindu priest or senior family members usually conduct the Hindu funeral ceremony. The deceased is then transferred for cremation.
For many years, Brember Family Funerals have worked with Hindu families to ensure your Hindu funeral rituals are catered for. By understanding what you and your family need, we created a specific Hindu funeral package to help you organise a funeral quickly and easily.
